~90% of Ghana's industrial fishing fleet has Chinese beneficial ownership behind local fronts, costing USD 14 million annually
Ghana reserves industrial fishing licences for wholly Ghanaian-owned vessels, but an investigation found around 90% of trawlers licensed in 2015 were built in China. Ghanaian front companies held the licences while Chinese nationals exercised effective control – a practice linked to underpaid fees and fines, and an estimated USD 14 million in lost revenue each year.
