Canada is a leader in the region with its commitment to, and progressing implementation of, a publicly accessible beneficial ownership register at federal level. Canada has committed to using the Beneficial Ownership Data Standard to link the data that is collected in registers at provincial level. Open Ownership is sharing technical expertise and providing support to the Canadian government in delivering this, and works closely with civil society actors within Canada to generate and share evidence to support beneficial ownership reforms. The US took a significant step in 2020 by legislating for a central beneficial ownership register at federal level. Open Ownership is liaising with US civil society organisations and government agencies to provide technical expertise to assist the US in moving forward with implementing this register.
Information on the other countries in the region will be added shortly.

Open Ownership has engaged through its membership of the Beneficial Ownership Leadership Group. We are working with the National Anticorruption System, the National Transparency Institute and other key government implementing agencies with the development of a regulatory framework and a digital system for the collection, storing and sharing of beneficial ownership data related to public procurement. Our efforts are also focused on building the capacity of government and non-government stakeholders to collect and use beneficial ownership data.
