Reviewing Kenya’s beneficial ownership framework - new Open Ownership submission

Kenya

In mid July 2022, Open Ownership (OO) submitted a response to a Kenyan government consultation regarding beneficial ownership transparency reforms, together with the East African Tax and Governance Network and Tax Justice Network Africa. Our joint response endorsed - and was endorsed by - Global Financial Integrity, which has just published its own feedback to the Kenyan consultation here.

OO and its partners provided feedback on how four separate laws could best be amended in order to strengthen the Kenyan beneficial ownership framework. The full document can be downloaded in PDF.

OO was asked to submit a response as part of ongoing work in Kenya, which also saw us deliver a recent two-day workshop in Nairobi. The workshop invited attendees to discuss the state of beneficial ownership data in Kenya, its practical implementation, and its connections to public procurement. For interested individuals, a video of the workshop is also available.

OO’s work in Kenya is part of a nine-month project, made possible thanks to support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
